gratuity to N Wilson the late Surveyor General on arrival of Mr Moorsom the gentleman appointed to succeed him.
I had allowed Mr Wilson to peruse Your Lordship's despatch as the simplest way of putting him in possession of the H. M's Government. That gentleman however as appears from his inclosed letter of the 8th ultimo appears that he was anxious to make it clear that he was entitled to a gratuity generally accorded to a Public servant when retiring from the service under ordinary circumstances, and before completing his time for a pension.
As Mr Wilson had been removed for conduct neither discreditable nor I nor my Council could admit such a claim.
Mr. Wilson's true position is therefore again placed before him in the enclosed reply of the 15th ultimo. He was thereby informed that whilst he would receive full salary to the date of Mr Moorsom's arrival I would also give him a further gratuity next August of two months pay conditionally that he should give every aid and information in his power to Mr Moorsom during the interval.
Mr Wilson has accordingly been paid full salary to the 5th Ultimo the date of Mr Moorsom's arrival and the further amount promised to him will involve a payment of $960. Surely this latter sum may seem more than
